Ernst Engel, 1821-1896.
German economist and statistician.
Enrst Engel trained in France
at the Ecole des Mines, Ernst Engel was a statistician in the Saxon and
subsequently Prussian civil
service for most of his life.
From masses of empirical data, Engel
unearthed the famous "Engel's Law" i.e., that the proportion of a
consumer's budget spent on food declines with rising income. Today, the "Engel
Curve" relating the composition of a consumption basket to the consumer's
income is named in his honor.
Ernst Engel edited the Prussian statistical journal, Zeitschrift
des Königlich Preussischen Statistischen Bureaus, from its inception
in 1861 until his retirement in 1881.
