James Dunbar, 1742-1798.
Scottish philosopher, educated at
Aberdeen. Dunbar afterwards became professor of Moral Philosophy and later
regent of King's College at the University of Aberdeen.
James Dunbar's 1780 Essay is an exercise on a conjectural
history of mankind, typical of the
Scottish Enlightenment, but advancing on similar prior works by
taking into account recent developments (e.g. American Revolution).
