British statistician and business cycle researcher, who identified the three-to-five year inventory cycle.
In his famous 1923 paper, Joseph Kitchin analyzed three time series of American and British data from 1890 to 1922, and identified two cycles - a major cycle of seven-to-ten years, and a minor cycle of about three-and-half years (40 months). The former was know before, but the latter was new and quickly dubbed "the Kitchin cycle".
Kitchin did not offer a theoretical explanation, leaving it for later economists to ponder. The explanation of the "Kitchin cycle" in terms of inventory is principally due to Abramovitz (1948) and its elaboration by Matthews (1959).
