Charles W. Macfarlane, 1852-1931.
Philadelphia businessman, engineer, economist and writer.
Charles William Macfarlane ("F" is lower-case) studied engineering at
Lehigh University, obtaining his degree in 1876. For the next
fifteen years, Macfarlane worked as an engineer and architect. In
1891, already nearing forty, C.W. Macfarlane took up economics, studying
first under Edmund J. James and Simon N.
Patten at the University of
Pennsylvania, before proceeding abroad
to Germany. Macfarlane studied under the Austrian
economist Eugen von Philippovich at the
University of Freiburg, and produced a dissertation on rent to receive
doctorate in 1893. Macfarlane would translate some of
Böhm-Bawerk's works into English, but it is
Macfarlane's 1899 Value and Distribution which made the big
splash with its magisterial, keen (but critical) review of
marginalist
economics.
