Austrian-born development economist. (later changed name to "Kurt Martin" in 1947)
Involved with the Marxist Frankfurt School in his youth. After his emigration to Britain to flee the Nazis, Kurt Mandelbaum was at the Oxford Institute of Statistics and later (from 1950) Manchester.
Mandelbaum was one of the pioneers of development theory. Kurt Mandelbaum's path-breaking 1947 book concentrated on Eastern European economic development. .
