Profile | Major Works | Resources |
English-born economist, trained at UCL and professor of political economy at the Johns Hopkins University, from the 1966 to 1990. His initial work was in applied development economics, but Newman moved swiftly into pure consumer theory and general equilibrium theory in the early 1960s. His most famous work is perhaps the 1965 monograph, Theory of Exchange, where he plumbs into the details of price-formation in a Walrasian economy.
Newman's review of Sraffa's PCMC in 1962 is considered one of the best, and led to an exchange of letters with Sraffa that are essential to clarifying several points.
