German economist sociologist. Hans Staudinger had been a student of Alfred Weber at Heidelberg. He became an activist in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from his student days, and served in WWI. After the war, Staudinger became a civil servant in the economics ministry of Weimar Germany. He went on to become Prussian minister of commerce from 1929 to 1932, and was thereafter briefly a SPD member of the Reichstag.
After the Nazis seized power, Staudinger joined the exodus of German scholars in the 1930s, joining the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research..
