Arnold Toynbee, 1852-1883.
English economic historian (not to be confused with his famous nephew, Arnold J.
Toynbee.)
Arnold
Toynbee was an English economic historian at Balliol College,
Oxford. Toynbee was famously among the first to identify
and describe the British "industrial revolution" as an event. His analysis
of monopolies and oligopolies was prescient. Toynbee was a thorough
historicist and adhered to the inductive method. A social
activist and humanitarian, he was also an opponent of laissez-faire economic
policy.
Toynbee died at the tragically young age of 30.
