Rice Vaughan, ? - 1672?
English-Welsh lawyer and one of the best early English writers on
money. In his Discourse on Coin and Coinage (written c.1630, published
posthumously
1675), Rice Vaughan promoted an advanced "metallist" theory of money,
in which the intrinsic value of money depends on the "proportion of other things
valued by them". He believed, in general, that value was determined by
"use and delight" and in proportion to the "rarity and abundance" of a
commodity.
