Italian engineer and mathematician, professor of mathematics at the University of Mantua from 1686. Although he contributed to many fields, Giovanni Ceva's contribution to economics is his 1711 De re numeriaria, on monetary theory. In it, Ceva promoted of the use of mathematical methods and stripped-down "economic models" in economic theory. W.S. Jevons considered him the first "mathematical economist".
