Umberto Ricci, 1879-1946
Self-educated Italian agricultural economist, who gradually moved
towards more theoretical issues relating to the Lausanne
School tradition (esp. Pareto). Ricci
succeeded Pantaleoni
at the University of Rome in 1924. A series of articles
criticizing Fascist policies led Mussolini do deprive him of his chair
at Rome in 1928. He subsequently took up a position at Cairo,
where he stayed until 1940, when Italy entered the war. He went on
to succeed Röpke at Istanbul.
After the war, the Rome chair was restored to him, but he died soon
after.
