Italian 16th Century banker and merchant from Reggio (in Emilia), Gasparo Scaruffi's reputation lays in his famous tract, Alitinonfo (from the Greek for "true light") In it, Scaruffi expounded the metallist theory of money in a manner similar to Davanzati. But, even more famously, Scaruffi set forth a plea for an "international" currency -- stamped and issued by an international body -- a "universal mint", bereft of "seignorage". This was one of the first -- but by no means the last -- call for such a scheme.
